Blue-green retention roofs change the way we look at rainwater: from a burden on drainage systems to a resource for vegetation, transpiration and the urban microclimate. The lecture will show how these systems can store water within the roof build-up, control its discharge, support vegetation, increase evapotranspiration, and contribute to urban cooling. It will focus on the difference between conventional vegetated roofs and retention roofs, the use potential of roof space and key design principles.
